We’re starting off this fall semester by going back to the basics!
Copyright was already complicated before the rise of LLMs, and now there are more legal grey areas to navigate as we try to incorporate Open Education into the classroom. To help our community explore these nuances with confidence, Windward Community College Library’s Information Resources & Collection Development Librarian has launched several resources on the basics of copyright, creative commons, fair use, and issues related to AI.
Go through the tabs below for a more detailed explanation of the new resources available.
The videos are available as a playlist on WCC Library’s YouTube channel, and are interspersed throughout the LibGuide.
The entire series is around 22 minutes total, with each video ranging around 3 to 6 minutes.

Copyright 101 covers the basics of copyright and how it works. [3:13 minutes]
Fair Use 101 explains the four factors of Fair Use and what courts consider when deciding if a use is or is not copyright infringement. [6:27 minutes]
How To: Fair Use Analysis goes over the main considerations and questions when conducting a Fair Use analysis. [4:23 minutes]
Creative Commons Licenses 101 explores the various types of Creative Commons licenses and their restrictions. [5:02 minutes]
On WCC Library’s website, under the Research tab and Research Guides sub tab, you can find the Copyright Essentials LibGuide.
Like the video series, it covers topics related to copyright, creative commons licenses, and fair use, but with lists of resources and interactive widgets included!
It provides university specific resources, scholarly sources, grey literature, and interactive widgets that help explain core concepts and how they apply to real life situations.
This is a living document, and it will be updated with another tab on classroom use exemptions this semester – just working on the videos first!

If you want to dive deeper into LLMs and Generative AI, WCC Library also provides a LibGuide on AI Essentials. It was created by Instruction Librarian, Rachel Jacobson, and Information Resources & Collection Development Librarian, Tawny Anuhea Bright.
The LibGuide is divided into six sections, including: How LLMs Work that provides video explanations and Impacts on Society.
The Impacts on Society section is divided into the main issues and talking points surrounding LLMs, such as: Misinformation, Disinformation, Fake News; Reinforcement of Stereotypes and Bias; Use of Natural Resources; Hidden Workers of LLMs; Social Behavioral Changes; Learning and Cognitive Thinking Ability; and Privacy and Surveillance.
